"From Capetown to Cairo": An Eight-Month Journey Across Africa Slideshow & Presentation.

In 2005/2006, a Calgary couple traveled alone across Africa in their trusty Land Cruiser. Eight months, 14 countries and over 30,000 km later they have had an experience which has changed their lives forever. Learn about the challenges of overland travel and share some exhilarating experiences, wildlife encounters, and unexpected challenges. Tom and Janet Feutchwanger will be on hand to share a slideshow and presentation with CORE members on their journey from Capetown, South Africa to Cairo, Egypt.

Also: Members will be asked if they are in favour of CORE becoming a member of an umbrella group: Federation of Mountain Clubs--which comes with certain benefits, especially insurance.

Slideshow on Trekking the Canol Heritage Trail in the Northwest Territories.

Ever wanted to walk along an old pipeline for 13 days?  How about if it was installed in the 1940s through the Mackenzie mountains of the Northwest Territories?  Join us while we share our experiences with you of backpacking along a 150 kilometer section of the Canol Heritage Trail with two adults and three youths.  The Canol Heritage Trail sits on the remains of the Canol road, a nearly forgotten part of Canadian history, built during World War II to support an oil pipeline.  Along the abandoned road, one of the most remote trails in Canada, the remains of pumping stations, road camps, bridges and trucks can still be seen.  This is truly a beautiful, isolated and rugged part of Canadian wilderness.  The guide books recommend to use guiding services, we chose to not use one, come and see if that was a good idea. (Presented by James & Dave -- friends of Jude Shaw, a CORE member)

Humanitarian Work in Asia - Slideshow & Presentation

Presentation by Lori Trieu, who traveled to Asia last year to work
with an organization called Clear Path International

Lori's one-hour presentation and slideshow will showcase the work of Clear Path International (CPI), an organization working with landmine victims in Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar and Laos. This presentation will explore and detail the involvement of NGOs (non-governmental organizations) helping in the largest and most populous continent on the planet. Asia contains more than 60% of the world's population, and at least 10% of the people in each of its countries live with some kind of disability. These individuals often live in extreme poverty, without access to education, health care services, or gainful employment.
