We need your help!!
CORE needs more members to get involved and contribute to the trips being done by the club (not just the 10-12 members who coordinate most of the trips). With a membership of over 125, we should be able to have a lot more trips on our schedule. Learn more about how to coordinate trips or co-coordinate with another person at the Nov. 30 Potluck and Trip Planning Night!

Note: Due to under-use, and maintenance overhead
(not to mention cost!), the CORE events phone
line (214-7500) was disconnected on Sept.
13, 2006. Please refer to our on-line calendar for upcoming events instead. The CORE executive sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause. |

Don't be Chicken!
Send in nominations for CORE's CHICKEN MOUNTAIN AWARD now!
Every year at
CORE's Annual General Meeting, we give out the
Chicken Mountain Award (rubber chicken) to the
coordinator of a trip that has "gone afoul" or
where something memorable or unusual has
happened. The award is named after one of CORE's
first ever hikes back in 1999. A group of
members were attempting to hike up Pigeon
Mountain, but ended up on the mountain beside
it. Since there were prairie chickens
spotted on the unknown mountain, it became known
as "Chicken Mountain".
You are encouraged
to send your nominations to
mailbox@corehike.org
throughout the year, rather than wait until the
AGM in May.

CORE October Monthly Meeting
Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006 - 7 p.m.1111 Memorial Drive N.W., old Firehall in Kensington
Members’ Photo Night!
Attention All CORE Members!
Here's your chance to share some of your most amazing photos from hiking, biking, scrambling, backpacking, or canoeing trips done during 2006. Or you can bring photos from other outdoor adventures you have experienced this summer. You will show your photos to the group using a digital project and tell us your stories associated with the photos. Audience participation is encouraged, e.g., comments and questions. The format will be fairly informal and, hopefully, fun.
Email Harvey if you’d like to present a “mini-slideshow” at the October meeting. The pics must be digital images (JPEGS) on a CD or DVD. Notebook PC and speakers will be provided by Mark P. The maximum number of participants for the evening will be 10, so be sure to register as soon as possible. No more than 10 minutes will be set aside for each “slideshow,” deadline to register is October 23. Harv will moderate the proceedings and will try to keep things moving along smoothly.
For further information and details, or to register to show your pictures, contact Harvey. Also, if you'd like to bring any hard copy prints to share with other members, please feel free to do so.

Don't miss this chance to enjoy delicious food, meet &
greet fellow CORE members, and get involved with
planning and suggesting trips for July, August and
September. The potluck will be held at Carol &
Harvey's. Simply contribute an entree, appetizer, salad
or dessert to the potluck and show up with your
enthusiasm and ideas for great hikes and events this
summer. Call Carol at (403) 249-8028 to RSVP and for
directions to her house in Lakeview.
We need more members to contribute to CORE's events
schedule: hikes, backpacks, canoe trips, cycling outings
(in the city or mountains), barbeques, ethnic nights,
etc. Please contact Jeanette at
jeanettenz@hotmail.com to
find out how you can co-coordinate a trip with an
experienced member. Or to get ideas for easy and
moderate hikes. An easy hike is defined as less than 10

Attention all Members: |
A company named Nomadic Routes Inc. has offered to put on a Map & Compass Navigation Course for CORE this coming fall. To book this course with Nomadic Routes, we need to know if any members are interested. We need a minimum of 6 people and a maximum of 12. The dates Nomadic Routes has suggested are: the week of Sept. 18 with an outing to the mountains on Sept. 23 or 24, or during the first two weeks of October (before Oct. 16).
To book dates for the course with Nomadic Routes, we need to put 25% down to secure the dates. The cost of the course is $98 plus GST for each person (or if we get 10 or more, the price would drop to $95 each).
Please send
email to
cmiyagawa@shaw.ca
if you're interested and are willing to pay a 25% deposit to
secure the course dates. (We still need to confirm if the
25% is refundable if we have to cancel the course.) The
sooner we know if there's enough interest, the sooner we can
book the course for the fall. If you'd like to contact
Nomadic Routes to get further information, here is their
contact info:

CORE March
Monthly Meeting - Thurs. March 23*, 2006 - 7 PM
Hiking
in Newfoundland Slideshow & PresentationHave you ever wondered what it would be like to hike, backpack or sea kayak in Newfoundland, Canada's most easterly province? On Thursday, March 23, the Calgary Outdoor Recreation Enthusiasts (CORE) and the Calgary Area Outdoor Council (CAOC) are hosting a slideshow and presentation on Newfoundland. CORE members are all welcome to attend. As well, some space is being set aside for members of the public who must register in advance at the phone number listed below. The slideshow is being presented by Sue Rendel of Gros Morne Adventures, a company which provides guided trips and outfitting throughout Newfoundland. Sue will focus primarily on hiking in Gros Morne National Park but she will also touch on the East Coast Trail near St. John's and a few more places around Newfoundland and Labrador. Sue and her husband Bob have lived and worked in Newfoundland all their lives. They both have a passion for many outdoor activities. Please note: Members of the public must register in advance to secure a seat at the presentation. Please call Robin at the Calgary Area Outdoor Council, (403) 270-2262, to register.

Planina, starting from Rai Chalet (Heaven Chalet) and
finishing at Kozia Stena Chalet (Goat's Wall Chalet). Next,
she'll show the longest backpack route in the country: Kom

including hiking and scrambling, starting from Rilski Ezera

slides will show Musala summit - the highest summit on the
Balkan Peninsula. A brief review of Pirin and Rhodopes
highlights and a mention of the Four Mountains traverse -
the Bulgarian section of the European Rambler Association's
E4 trail - will round out her presentation. Stefka's show
will cover examples of hiking, backpacking, scrambling and
traverse routes, in the Central and Southern part of
Bulgaria.
