We're
having a party! A CORE End-of-Year bash! An early Christmas Get-Together! |
When: Thurs. Nov. 24 8:15 pm - 10:00 pm
Come hear our guest speaker, Debbie van Berkel, give a presentation on "Leave No Trace" hiking and backpacking (7 pm). Then join us for drinks, munchies and "schmoozing" with your fellow outdoor lovers! We hope to see lots of new members at the party (and, a merry gang of "seasoned" members, as well).
Where: Ye Olde Firehall, 1111 Memorial Drive N.W., 2nd floor
Why? Because we like to have fun! Also, it's our chance to look back over the past 12 months, laugh at our misadventures, and celebrate another successful year as a club.

What are Yac Tracs, you ask? They are just the thing for walking on icy streets and icy mountain trails this winter. They are similar to crampons but easier to slip on over your boots and shoes. If you'd like information on a store in Calgary which has Yac Tracs in stock, contact Carol at cmiyagawa@shaw.ca. (Thanks to Deborah Side for providing this information to us.)

Top of the World Park, B.C. - Anyone
interested in this camping/hiking trip?
Contact
Will at abcxyzwf@hotmail.com
How to get there. #1 to #93 then south
through Radium Hot Springs and Fairmont,
to Canal Flats. About a 5 hour drive.
Fairmont is a good stop enroute since in
addition to the resort there are the
"Indian baths", a vintage stone building
with recessed individual pools and some
out door ones on a tufa bluff above the
Fairmont parking lot. Also, below the
swimming pool is a trail that leads to a
waterfall over a natural pool. Good for
water massage.
At Canal Flats an interesting lumber
town, turn left one kilometre south onto
a gravel logging road. This road goes
22k south toward Swansea Lake. At 20k
stop at Lussier Hot Springs a natural
and improved springs. Parking area, WC,
and trail down a slope to the springs.
Five pools from hot to warm before
entering Lussier Creek.
One k. further on is Moose Lake with
excellent camping facilities, trails
around the lake. Cheap rates. Firewood
provided free. The gravel logging road
to TOW begins here. 30k. on scenic
route, no facilities or structures until
arrival at parking lot. Then a 6k level
hike through forest to Fish Lake, a
small lake with a cabin and pier, tent
sites nearby. Group rate discounts.
Individual rate approximately $5. Cabin
has 20+ sleeping platforms, stove,
firewood provided. Chop your own
outside. B.C. fishing license required
if you wish to fish. Fish lake has a
perimeter trail and other trails to
higher elevations. Peaks surround half
of the lake opposite the cabin. There
are 15 tent sites, flat sand with wood
surrounds right on the shore of the lake
a short distance from the cabin. Other
facilities, food storage, etc. are
provided.

Mecca Parking Lot - Car Pooling / Parking
By: Adam Noel, Calgary Area Outdoor Council
Parking notices were placed recently on some vehicles parked near the recycle bins in front of the old Mecca Café site. These notices essentially stated that no parking will be allowed along West Valley Road SW, which led to some user concerns that the long talked about “car pool parking lot“ on the west side of Calgary had been kyboshed.
Not so is the case, the area is now being prepared for the construction of the new interchange and signage will be improved to indicate where users may leave their cars while the area is being redeveloped. The Calgary Area Outdoor Council has been assured that the long awaited Car Pool Parking Lot is included in the approved interchange design. However interim disruptions may occur during the construction period, which is normal and should not be cause for concern.
As background information, this project has
been some 4 years in the making. To see
it coming into
reality at long last is very gratifying to
those individuals who have
been supporting
the concept of car pool lots in all four
quadrants of the city.
City staff
should be commended for providing regular
parking space for car-poolers
on the west side
of town, thereby legitimizing what has been
an ongoing social service
practiced by
many individuals. Car pooling undoubtedly
reduces the number of
vehicles on the
road, along with the associated traffic
problems, and also has the environmental
benefit of reducing car emissions.

NEWS FROM CORE
Trip Planning at January meeting
Are you willing to coordinate a trip this
winter (either x-c skiing, downhill skiing,
snows hoeing or winter hike)? Would you be
willing to co-coordinate with an experienced
CORE member? Then come out to our January
monthly meeting beginning at 7 pm and bring
your maps, guide books, etc. We'll have
books and references for you to look at. The
plan is to spend the first half hour of the
meeting filling the schedule for February
and March. An exciting slideshow by Marta
and Chester on backcountry skiing will
follow. You're also welcome to join us after
the meeting at Julios Barrio for a drink and
chance to socialize.
Parking Lot at old Firehall now $1 in the
evenings
The Calgary Area Outdoor Council and the
City of Calgary have installed a pay meter
at the parking lot west of the old firehall.
We must now pay $1 to park there for the
evening. It is possible to arrange for a
parking pass from CAOC that will allow you
to park there for free. Call 270-2262 for
more info. Also, due to several new popular
restaurants in the area, CAOC's parking lot
is being used more frequently, so arrive
early for our monthly meetings to ensure a
parking space.
