CORE's September Monthly Meeting
Hiking and Backpacking in New Zealand
by Dave Mulligan
Thursday, September 30th

This month our guest presenter will be Dave Mulligan, a member of the Rocky Mountain Ramblers and the Alpine Club of Canada.  Several years ago, Dave spent considerable time in New Zealand, hiking and backpacking.  He has agreed to come and share his hiking and outdoor experiences in "Kiwi Land" with members of CORE. (Wonder if he encountered any Hobbits?)

Please join us at the old firehall in Kensington, 1111 Memorial Drive, for our September gathering.  We meet on the second floor of the firehall.  For newcomers, be sure to enter by the door at the back, facing the river, and come up the stairs.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. sharp, with Dave's 30 minute slide presentation at 7:35.  Hope to see you there!

Coming Soon - New Event Calendar

The new CORE club event calendar will soon be available. It will replace our current calendar and allow CORE members to post their own events and have the event automatically emailed out to registered CORE members. You will have to register on the board one time, first time to get on the automatic email list. Details on how to do that will be posted soon.

Event coordinators will be able to enter and edit their own calendar entry, and members interested in participating can email the coordinator right from the calendar. This will eliminate a lot of work and allow the membership to post their own events.

The rules for members coordinating hikes haven't changed and still apply. We encourage members to become event coordinators and don't be shy to ask others to co-coordinate with you if you want assistance.

CORE Monthly Meeting - Thursday, July 29
Outdoor Footwear Presentation
by Fred Blaker, Mountain Equipment Co-op

Fred's talk and demo will cover different categories of outdoor footwear and their suitability for activities and conditions (e.g. day hiking, backpacking, scrambling, wet conditions, dry conditions, etc.) and basic construction materials/methods and how these affect the footwear's end use, durability, fit, and feel. The most important thing with footwear is fit, so basic fitting information will be presented (how to assess fit), as well as customizing fit with footbeds and some lacing techniques that can dramatically change a boot/shoe's fit.

Fred has been working in the outdoor industry for 15 years, ten of those at MEC. During that time he has become very experienced in all aspects of outdoor footwear design and fit. He will be bringing examples of boots, shoes, and footbeds.

The presentation will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. at the old firehall in Kensington, second floor. Hope to see you there!

Rick gave an insightful presentation on the Congo.

From Nov. 2002 - May 2003, Rick fulfilled a six-month contract in the Congo with the United Nations. He served as a senior UN inspector of the peacekeeping units assigned to the UN Mission for that region. He operated or was based out of Kisangani (formerly Stanleyville which is situated along the Congo River, some 1200 kms in the heart of the jungle. His assignment took him to various locations throughout the northeast part of the country -- all of which, at the time, were held by rebel forces of one faction or another.

March Monthly Meeting - March 25, 2004

Colleen Campbell did a presentation about Bear Safety and their Habitats.

Colleen Campbell has done field research for carnivore conservation projects since 1991. Since 1994, her focus has been grizzly bears, with a concentration in the Lake Louise area during the past three summers. Her direct experience is supported with personal research of the biology, the natural history and the cultural history of the animals she has studied in the field. As an experienced post-secondary educator, she willingly assumed a role speaking about the animals she studies in the field and has been presenting lectures about the wildlife, supported with slides, for the past decade.

Colleen Campbell is also an artist and works as a field biologist in the Bow Valley watershed during the summer. The content of her work is derived from the subjects she studies, the ancient stories involving the animals she has studied and from the land itself. Her work for the Eastern Slopes Grizzly Bear Project has also stimulated to a series of written portraits of some of the bears under study. She is currently working on a collection of essays derived from her observations and studies.

For more info on Bears, Colleen has provided us with 2 of her articles:
