Past Meetings

January monthly meeting

Back in 1996, guest presenter, Dave, his wife Aimee  and their fathers paddled over 260 kilometres of the remote Upper Stikine River in northwest B.C.

Dave showed his slides of this amazing trip which took roughly 10 days and required that the foursome fly in by float plane.  Using primarily topo maps and a brief description from "Canoe Trips in British Columbia," the canoeists camped in wilderness areas along the river and were thankful for occasional signs which advised them when to portage.

Although there was no guide book written on the Stikine River back in 1996, groups now wanting to canoe the river are more fortunate.  A book called "The Guide to Paddling the Great River" by Jennifer Voss is currently available.  Dave says that his group probably could have written their own guide book after they were finished!

March 27th Monthly Meeting

What's Happening In Our Mountain Parks?

The national parks in Canada’s Rocky Mountains are magnificent, but they are also fragile and vulnerable landscapes. They need our help, the help of those who manage them, and the help of those who visit and enjoy them. That help begins with understanding. The purpose of this slide show presentation is to help you understand how nature functions in the mountains, how our use and enjoyment of the parks affects nature, what issues our use poses for park management, and some of the steps which have to be taken to protect our parks for the future. Booklets and brochures will be made available to all.

Join us for a presentation with Dave Poulton, Executive Director of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, to learn more about how nature functions in the mountains, how our use and enjoyment of the parks affects nature, and some of the steps which have to be taken to
protect our parks for the future.
