There are several hikes and scrambles scheduled so far for the weekend, and some other (easier) ones will be posted as we get closer to the weekend. Here is a brief summary, TO REGISTER, please check the Calendar for July 1 to 4.

July 1, 2010 - Bear's Hump

Easy, 1.2km, 240m. Although this is an easy hike, the most popular short hike in Waterton, it is one of the steepest short hikes. From the top is a wonderful view over Waterton lake, town and prairies , although it is almost always windy at the top. If enough people are around the Bear Mountain Motel in the afternoon, we will do this short hike or it can be done at any time individually.

Friday July 2 - Akamina Ridge - Waterton Lakes Natl. Park
Hike Rating - Strenuous; Scramble Rating - Easy. Elev. Gain - 1000 m. Distance 20 km round trip. One quote I like by John Muir is "in every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks". When I joined CORE in 2006 I made a lot of GREAT friends and one of those friends was Branko. In my local hiking club down south (Lethbridge) we do a memorial hike for members that pass away. As most members of CORE are aware Branko Peterman passed away Nov. 2009. Whenever Branko signed up for a hike I coordinated or when he sent the once in awhile email to see what was new down south he always stated how Akamina Ridge "blew him away" and how much he loved hiking it (but I'm sure he enjoyed every event with CORE). This is my way of paying tribute to him and honoring his memory as a friend and I hope that all events this weekend will allow participants to reflect in their own way in which they knew Branko whether they be hiking or scrambling. After the hike we'll have a brew and bite to eat back in the Waterton townsite.

Friday July 2 - Lower Bertha Falls

Easy, 5.2kms, 150m. Option of Bertha Lake, Moderate, 11.4km, 460m.
This very popular hike climbs gradually through a forest rich with undergrowth and wildflowers, breaking out on an open slope for excellent views of Upper Waterton Lake before entering the beargrass-studded area of Bertha Creek Valley, then arrives at Lower Bertha Falls where Bertha Creek cascades across the rock.
Option: The trail continues to Upper Bertha Falls and Bertha Lake, for those wishing to make this hike into a moderate hike of 11.4km and 460m elevation. From Lower Bertha Falls, the trail crosses a bridge over the creek and then a steep climb to the hanging valley of Bertha Lake. After a steady ascent through the forest the trail reaches Upper Bertha Falls, a cascade spilling over a staircase of brick-red argillite before reaching Bertha Lake summit. A short .7 km brings you to the campground (5.8km) from where you can continue along the north shore to the West End of Bertha Lake to extend this hike to 7.4 km (14.8 km round trip).
Please note that there is no coordinator for this hike beyond Lower Bertha Falls, so those wishing to continue beyond that need to be in a party of at least 4 people (there are bears on this trail) for your safety and to be a CORE event.

Friday July 2 - Scramble-Mount Crandell
Rating-Extra Difficult,Elevation 1040,Time 4-7 hours, Three different routes, lots of bushwacking fun and scrambling? Great views of town of Wateton and the lake.

Friday July 2 - Lineham Ridge

Difficult, 17.2km, 950m.
Option of partial hike, Moderate, 10.4km, 350m or 12.6km, 500m.
This spectacular hike (the highest trail-accessible point in Waterton) offers incredible panoramic views of the surrounding mountains in all directions and the beautiful deep blue Lineham Lakes which lie in the basin of the ridge. Although this hike is rated difficult, we will going at a leisurely pace with plenty of stops.
There those wanting to do part of the hike to Row Meadow Junction, or a little further to Upper Rowe Lakes, this becomes a moderate hike. This is only possible for 4 or more people to do one or both options.

Saturday July 3 - Mount Blakiston
Rating-Extra Difficult, Time 6-10 hours, Elevation 1410m, Highest mountain (2910m) scramble in Waterton from the Scrambles book, we could complete the traverse Mounts Hawkins and Lineham if people are motivated.

Saturday July 3 - Combination hikes

Easy, minimal elevation.
A combination of easy hikes in and around Waterton.
Return distances:
Linnett Lake Loop - 2 km
Red Rock Canyon Loop - 1.4km
Blakiston Falls - 2km
Cameron Lakeshore - 3.2km

Saturday July 3 -Ruby Lake via Ruby Ridge (OFF-TRAIL)
Distance: 13 km point to point, Combined Elevation Gain: 1080 m, Combined Elevation Loss: 1080 m. Rating: Moderate to some Difficult sections.Minor car shuttle involved. Off trail usually used in the off season by locals to Ruby Lake nestled beneath the south face of towering Mt. Blakiston. Crossing of Ruby Creek on hike out may require watershoes. Pace will be easy but steady with many photo ops and rest breaks. Great scenic views, wildlife and photo ops. Hike is dependent of snow coverage on north face of Ruby Ridge so this hike may have alternate hike available which will be Lee Ridge/Gable Pass in Glacier Natl. Park which is 26 km point to point,Combined elevation gain: 1000 m, Elevation loss: 900 m (requires passport)Minor car shuttle involved. Beautiful scenic views of Chief Mtn and the Belly River Valley.

IF BOTH RUBY LAKE AND LEE RIDGE/GABLE PASS ARE NOT HIKEABLE DUE TO STEEP AND DEEP SNOW THEN THE ALTERNATE HIKE WILL BE: Yarrow Lake which is 24 km return and 500 m elevation gain with a hike rating of Moderate, Yarrow is located outside of Waterton on the north Waterton Park boundary which will require car pooling.

PLEASE NOTE THAT PARTICIPANTS FOR THE HIKE MAY REQUIRE A PASSPORT

Saturday July 3 - Lineham Falls

Rating Easy, 8.4km, 250m. This is the same area as the previous day hike to Lineham Ridge, but on the other side of Mount Lineham with open views back down the valley and goes to a view of a 100m waterfall tumbling from a massive cliff below Lineham Lakes basin. Wildflowers and possibility of mountain goats on the cliffs and slopes. Possibility of another easy hike afterwards if interested.

Saturday July 3 -Waterton-Carthew/Alderson
Carthew/Alderson
- 20.1 km, 650m gain, 1050m loss. That means a long gradual down after a not so long up with amazing views at the summit. Mod to diff based on CORE's distance standards but really not that hard.

Sunday July 4 -Kootenai Lake, Glacier Natl. Park (Easy to Moderate)
There are two ways to do this:

Plan A) Those who wish may take the 10:00 am Waterton Shoreline Boat down to Goat Haunt which will require a RETURN TICKET, and in so doing the hike will be 8 km return, 60 m elevation gain and is rated as easy and suitable to hikers of all abilities including those with small children.

Plan B) is for those who wish to hike from Waterton Townsite to Kootenai Lake and then taking the boat back to Waterton Townsite, this works out to be 17 km to Kootenai Lake and then 4 km back out to Goat Haunt so Plan B works out to 21 km total with elevation gain of 200 m and will require a one way boat ticket which can be purchased at the dock at Goat Haunt with EXACT Canadian cash. Boat Tickets can be purchased in advance from Waterton Shoreline Cruises as well. This will allow participants to return to Waterton on the boat of their choice. There are also several options at Goat Haunt such as an easy stroll to Rainbow Falls or a lung stretch to Goat Haunt Overlook which offers superb views of Waterton Lake. Many other options are excellent fising in Kootenai Lake, superb moose watching and rare bird watching by the lakeshore.

FOR THOSE WISHING TO TAKE THE BOAT DOWN: EACH PARTICIPANT WILL NEED A PASSPORT AND PURCHASE A RETURN BOAT TICKET - 10:00 AM DEPART FROM WATERTON, RETURN BOAT TO WATERTON EITHER 2:25 PM OR 5:25 PM, ONCE YOU DISEMBARK AT GOAT HAUNT PLEASE PROCEED TO THE BACKCOUNTRY CUSTOMS/RANGER STATION, THE HIKING GROUP WILL MEET THE BOAT GROUP AT THE GAZEBO NEXT TO THE RANGER STATION, THE HIKING GROUP SHOULD ARRIVE ROUGHLY 11:00 AM. WHEN WE GROUP UP HERE WE WILL CLEAR CUSTOMS AND PROCEED TO KOOTENAI LAKE. GOAT HAUNT OVERLOOK IS ON THE WAY TO KOOTENAI LAKE IF SOME WISH TO HIKE IT, IT TAKES ABOUT 15-20 MINUTES TO REACH THE TOP GAINING ABOUT 150M. RAINBOW FALLS IS ABOUT 30-45 MINS RETURN BUT RELATIVELY FLAT AND WORTH THE WALK. IF YOU PLAN TO FISH, PHOTOGRAPHY AND DO THE OPTIONS AT AN UNHURRIED PACE THEN I SUGGEST YOU PURCHASE THE 5:25 PM RETURN BOAT TICKET. THE COORDINATOR IS HIKING PLAN B) AND PURCHASING A 5:25 PM ONE WAY RETURN BOAT TICKET THEREFORE THOSE WHO ARE DOING PLAN A) WILL BE ON THERE OWN FOR THE BOAT DOWN TO GOAT HAUNT. PARTICIPANTS WILL NEED TO LET ME KNOW IF THEY ARE DOING PLAN A) OR PLAN B) WHEN REGISTERING FOR THIS EVENT SO THAT I HAVE PROPER HEAD COUNT AT THE GAZEBO DOWN AT GOAT HAUNT AT 11:00 AM WHEN THE BOAT GROUP AND HIKE GROUP MEET. HIKING GROUP MEETS AT 8:00 AM AT THE BERTHA LAKE TRAILHEAD TO START THE HIKE TO GOAT HAUNT ALSO HIKING GROUP WILL NEED TO HIKE WALK BACK TO THE BERTHA LAKE TRAILHEAD (ABOUT 15 MINUTE WALK) TO GET YOUR VEHICLE.

There are a couple of spots still left on this trip. The plan is to canoe 10-18 km down an easy and scenic part of the Milk River on Saturday, and possibly do an interpretive hike with the park on Sunday. Everybody will have to arrange their own canoe and a way of getting it down to the park. There will be a small car shuttle in the morning and evening on Saturday for the canoeing.

The total cost for the campsite is $310, so it depends on how many people come as to what the price-per-person will be. People must pay $15.50 to reserve their spot. If we have a fire, a bundle of wood is approx $8-10. If interested, please send an email to Jeanettenz@hotmail.com

Columbia River 4-Day Canoe Trip:

Rick Thrale is planning a four-day canoe trip (Friday, Jul 29 to Monday, 1 Aug) on the Columbia River with some of his family members. They would like to include up to a "maximum" of two additional canoes from CORE members if there is interest by anyone in joining. Point of Embarkation will be near the Town of Invermere. Point of Disembarkation will be near Golden. Total Distance is roughly 135 KMs depending on how often one gets lost in the many river channels. The River Rating is a Grade 1 (roughly the same as the Red Deer River but water temps are colder).

Participants should be physically capable of enduring 3-1/2 days of continuous paddling/camping in the wilds. Note: There are no camp grounds along this stretch -- camp spots will likely be on sand bars and available areas can be crowded if there are many other canoeists in the area. Canoes, equipment and logistics will be up to the members to provide for themselves. Contact: Rick Thrale 668-0107 or RThrale@shaw.ca if interested.

Annual Potluck and BBQ - 7 p.m. on June 4th

Alberta Centennial Mountain Expedition

As part of the Alberta 100th birthday celebration, Harvey Kwan is coordinating a couple of scrambling events related to the Alberta Centennial Mountain Expedition. The overall objective of this endeavor is to summit 100 peaks in the Rocky Mtns. = 100th provincial birthday.

The goal is to scramble up to the summit of the mountain, install a new register - (canister) at the top, take pictures and write an article about these adventures to be posted on the Alberta Centennial Mountain Expedition web-site. Harvey is running this as a CORE event.

He is volunteering for this event and has been assigned the following mountains:
Mount Fable near Canmore very close to Grotto Mtn. and Castle Mountain. Both scrambles need to be completed by Sept 1. (the province's birthday).

Mount Fable will be first and Castle second because the snow will be gone on Fable soon.
Castle will be a long day. We will need lots of daylight. Castle is rated as an easy scramble and
Fable is rated as a moderate one. Harvey will try to figure out the best dates that work for most people
( June, July or Aug.)

If you are interested you need you to fill out a special waiver from the Centennial Mtn organizers.
The deadline is May 22. Please email Harvey at harvk@shaw.ca if you would like a waiver or more information about this event. It should be a lot of fun too, and like Jill says, this will be the best hike ever.

Fraser River 10-Day Canoe Trip:

I am planning a ten-day canoe trip (Friday, Jul 1 to Sunday, 10 Jul) on the Fraser River with some of my family members. We'd like to include up to a "maximum" of two additional canoes from CORE members if there is interest by anyone in joining us. Point of Embarkation will be Tete Jeune Cache (Junction of Hwy 15 and Hwy 16). Point of Disembarkation will be Penny (a few miles before you get to some heavy rapids just before Prince George along Hwy 16). Total Distance is 240 KMs.

The River Rating is a fairly fast Grade 1 with some minor Grade 2 around some of the river bends. Participants should be physically (and mentally) capable of enduring ten days of continuous paddling/camping in the wilds. Canoes, equipment and logistics will be up to the members to provide for themselves. Contact: Rick Thrale 668-0107 or RThrale@shaw.ca if interested.

Teton Crest Trail
Jackson Hole / Moose, Wyoming
August 2004

This is a wonderful semi loop hike starting at the Jackson Hole ski resort and covering 47 kilometers on top of the Teton Crest Trail, ending up at a camp site / lodge at Jenny Lake.

According to Mapquest.com, Jackson hole is 1250 kilometers from Calgary and can be easily driven in 2 days. We would camp one night along the way.

The elevation gain will be varied and some sections are rather steep. The distances between camp sites will be 11-13 kilometers per day. Most of the elevation gain will be in the first part of each day followed by substantial ridge walking and awesome views. We have 3 passes to cross in 4 days. Lots of water and lots of camps sites. All in all a good challenge.

The itinerary is as follows.

Fri. Aug 27 - Hike - day 3.
Sat. Aug 28 - Hike - day 4.
Sun Aug 29 - Travel Day to Calgary.
Aug 30 - Travel Day to Calgary-arrive home.

You must have experience in multi-day treks carrying at least a 40 pound pack for at least 4 days. The altitude of this hike will be over 10,000 feet for most of the hike.

If we do this as 1 group of 6 and another group of maximum of 6 (or less) we can have a wider choice of camping spots and not be forced to camp in the designated group areas which are, according to my hiking map, are where I wanted to stop for the day.

Cost will be be $15 US for the backcountry permit per group of 6.

I have 4 spots for group 1 open and there are all 6 spots for group 2 open.
