Quito, Ecuador, the Galapagos and on to Machu Picchu

Adventures in Quito, the Galapagos Islands and along the Inca Trail

In October 2008, John Robinson and Elizabeth Ziegler, long-time CORE members, headed to Quito, the capital of Ecuador. After a brief tour of the city, they flew to the Galapagos Islands, arriving at an airport on Baltra Island.  From Santa Cruz Island, they boarded a boat, the Gap Adventurer III, which would be their floating home for the next three days.  Along the way, they photographed an abundance of wildlife, including sea turtles, marine iguanas, nazca boobies, flamingos, and albatross.

They eventually made their way to Cusco, the old Inca capital of Peru, where they started their next adventure: hiking for four days and three nights along the famous Inca Trail to the ruins at Machu Picchu.

Be sure to come out and see John and Elizabeth's amazing photos of their South American adventure!

CORE April Meeting

Topic: Climbing Mount Aconcagua

CORE member David Somerville will describe his first attempt to summit Mt. Aconcagua with his daughter Hilary just over a year ago, in late February/early March 2008. At just under 23,000 feet, this is the highest summit in the world outside the Himalayas. He will talk about expedition preparation, training and provisioning as well as the actual ascent up the normal route almost to Berlin, the last camp before the summit.

Don't look now, but it's time once again for the
Chicken Mountain Award!

The award for 2008 goes to Jeanette N., who was the coordinator for the canoe trip down the Bow River from Fish Creek Park to Carseland.   Two brothers on the trip had capsized their canoe -- and they were the most experienced of the lot!     Apparently the brothers didn't stick around for receiving the coveted rubber chicken...

Italy: One big giant hiking boot!

CORE March Meeting
Thursday, March 26, 2009 - 7 PM

Guest Speaker:
Mike Galbraith

Via Ferrata
and other Dolomite stories

Two weeks of climbing adventure in the Dolomites in Northern Italy

Via Ferrata means “Iron Road” in Italian, and is the name applied to climbing paths and routes protected by cables, ladders, spikes etc. – usually in the Dolomites in Northern Italy. These routes were first developed during the First World War as a means of easily and safely moving troops around the mountains.  In the summer of 2007, Mike and two friends from Calgary climbed a number of these routes over a two-week period. This is the story of their Italian adventure.

Mike has climbed mountains of every size and shape since the early 60’s. He has made ascents of many different routes of every standard in his native Scotland, the European Alps, Canadian Rockies, Yosemite and the Himalayas.

CORE February Meeting
Thursday, February 26, 2009
7 PM

Presentation: WILD ALBERTA AT THE CROSSROADS

This thought-provoking presentation by Marian and Robin White is based on their book Wild Alberta at the Crossroads which was released in Dec. 2007. The book covers a seven-year personal journey by this writer-photographer team through Alberta’s six natural regions: mountains, prairie, parkland, foothills, boreal forest, and shield. It is partly an invitation to people to reconnect with Nature by going out and enjoying the beauty and diversity of the landscapes, plants and animals; and partly an assessment of our stewardship in protecting wild Alberta from relentless industrial growth. How will Alberta respond? Is it to be business as usual or will we, as others are already doing, seize the opportunity to turn decisively towards a greener future? This is a deeply ethical question, for the lives of future generations may be affected irreversibly by our generation’s decisions.

Robin and Marian will have some copies of their book for sale and autograph for those who are interested. The book costs approximately $40.

Group size restrictions lowered at Moraine Lake, Banff National Park

For the past several years, hikers and climbers visiting the popular Moraine Lake area (including Mt. Temple, Paradise Valley and Larch Valley) have had to spend much of the summer traveling in groups of 6 because of the grizzly bear that calls the area home. Based on input from Parks staff and bear experts, Parks Canada has announced the group size minimum will now be 4 when the group size restriction is in place. For more information, visit: http://www.pc.gc.ca/docs/v-g/oursgest-bearmanag/sec4/og-bm4b_E.asp

Tennis -for free!  Practice or play outside- you don't have to be like Agassi--Beginners welcome and group lessons optional. Dust off your racquet and bring some balls. Drinks afterwards at the bar.   Check out the calendar for upcoming tennis times.

Volleyball - try something new! Beginners welcome.  This is a fun game and something that you can learn easily. Call Pat at (403) 338-1201 for details.
